Kamino Finance DeFi protocol based on the Solana network

Kamino Finance has rocketed up Solana's decentralized finance company leaderboard over the past three months, and currently has the highest total value locked for an illiquid platform bet, over $1.1 billion, according to DefiLlama .

There are many reasons why Camino is so successful, but I would like to highlight five reasons why I personally think Camino is head and shoulders above other decentralized finance products and why I will continue to use it long after their first season of points is over at the end. March 2024.

NOTE : Nothing in this post should be considered financial advice. I am sharing this content for informational purposes only.

1. Lending + Pools

There are two main strategies for generating income from your crypto assets: lending and adding liquidity to liquidity pools . I love that Kamino offers both of these strategies under one roof, making the path to DeFi much easier, especially for new/inexperienced users or people who don't dabble in crypto on a regular basis.

2. One-way deposits/withdrawals

Adding liquidity to the liquidity pool should be possible in one click. Unfortunately, most liquidity pools require the user to add liquidity to both sides of the pool, which is a pain in the ass because a) pools aren't always split 50/50, b) users then need to figure out how much of one pool token to trade for another to receive the desired amount of each token, and c) users then have to actually conduct the exchange on a separate site such as Jupiter.

Kamino turns this stupid, time-consuming and user-hostile approach on its head by allowing users to add one-way liquidity, which is then exchanged for the desired asset ratio for the pool, making adding liquidity easy even for new/inexperienced users. . And what's even better is that it's the default option when you want to add liquidity.

3. High profitability (explanation)

Returns are very important for such a volatile asset class as cryptocurrency. Many people turn to cryptocurrency because of the opportunity to make money that they feel is not available through their job/career or through traditional finance. And Camino has some of the best harvests I've ever seen on Solana. There are three reasons why their yields are excellent:

  1. They are an aggregator of liquidity options, so they offer a one-stop shop for viewing liquidity pools in Raydium, Orca and Meteora. Why use three sites when you can use one?
  2. Camino actively manages the funds you provide to the liquidity pool, including ensuring that the funds remain within an advantageous price range and collecting and accumulating rewards. These are things that advanced users can do themselves, but Camino offers this level of fund management to more average users who don't have time to look after their liquidity positions.
  3. Camino seems to be doing a great job of building partnerships with other teams by offering additional rewards for contributing to certain strategies/pools. Some of the more notable rewards they offer in various pools include JTO and BONK (in addition to the more typical BLZE and MNDE rewards that you can find elsewhere).

Camino also does a great job of explaining returns and risks in two very important ways. First, users can intuitively hover over the APY amount to see a breakdown of the sources of return for each strategy. In the case of one of my favorite liquidity pools - JitoSOL-SOL - profitability is formed from two sources: 1) commissions calculated over the previous 7 days, annualized and accrued compound interest (in this case 3.65%) and 2) rewards annualized (in this case 6.84% in JTO). This really helps me make more informed choices about where to invest my hard-earned capital.

Kamino also offers an "Information and Risks" tab for each of its strategies/pools, which is a great way to learn more about the product you're considering working with. I like this level of transparency and believe more products should promote greater transparency and knowledge on the part of users who too often think about money/APY rather than risk.

The returns are great, but everyone knows that an even more important reason to be active in decentralized finance right now is to prepare your wallets for the distribution of future governance tokens from popular Solana applications. And Kamino has taken advantage of this meta in many ways, not only offering its own scoring program (whose first season ends on March 31st), but also offering unique strategies for maximizing points in different ecosystems!

A distinctive strategy they offer is JUP vaults, which allow liquidity providers to earn Kamino Points, Meteora Points (as the liquidity pools are hosted on Meteora), and Blaze Stake Points (through BLZE rewards).

5. Portfolio Tracking Tools

Another great example of Kamino's commitment to offering a great user experience is the Portfolio section, which allows users to easily track their various positions, accrued points, understand the risk of liquidation if they borrow, find and claim their accumulated rewards, see transaction. history and see profit and loss for each position. The interface is intuitive and helps you better understand which strategies actually produce the expected results.

In conclusion, Kamino has earned its place at the top of the Solana DeFi rankings, in my opinion, not because they offer the best points program for opportunistic farmers, but because they have created a great user experience that allows people to easily:

  1. explore a wide range of strategies such as borrowing/lending and liquidity pools
  2. deposit/withdraw funds to/from various strategies
  3. understand the profitability and risks of each strategy
  4. earn points in the Solana DeFi ecosystem
  5. track your portfolio progress

And I've only scratched the surface of Kamino's cool features/strategies like Muliply, Long/Short, and their wide range of dashboards and documentation for various products. This is a product that will be worth exploring and using long after the points meta wears off.
